Industrial Designer

Davide Tonizzo is a designer of diverse skill and experience. The Toronto native studied Mechanical Engineering at Ryerson University before embarking on his industrial design career.

He began his work experience in Turin, Italy with the prestigious design house, I.DE.A Institute, designing cars for Alfa Romeo, Ferrari, Fiat, Lancia and other brands. As well, he completed numerous furniture and lighting projects for leading Italian manufacturers.

In 1993, he set up his independent practice in Toronto, Canada.

Davide has received numerous awards for his products and his work has appeared in many international design publications. He has worked in diverse product areas from furniture to handbags, from dishware to eco-friendly transportation. An international designer, Davide has worked in Canada, the US, Mexico, Denmark, Spain and Italy.

Davide’s philosophy is not to have one. He believes that the true essence of what a product should be can be hindered by too rigid adherence to a particular paradigm. Davide approaches each work from the technical, environmental and manufacturing perspectives. Once these challenges are met, he creates a product “soul” which communicates to the user.

Davide mashes different techniques when designing a product. He mixes “old-school” tools such as compasses and coloured pencils with today’s CAD programs. This hybrid approach gives his work a very organic feel, something the designer feels is necessary to assure that the product’s soul makes a connection to the user.
