Setting New Standards

Opened for business on June 9th, 2014, the new Fort McMurray Airport Terminal acts as a gateway to the community of Fort McMurray. The terminal is part of a larger expansion to the airport, in response to the tremendous growth of the region, and includes a new taxiway, apron, access roads and airport hotel. In order to minimize the building’s carbon footprint, the design incorporates several sustainable strategies appropriate for a northern climate. Source omb architects.

Fort McMurray Airport is the first airport in North America, if not the world, to offer 100% powered seats in its new terminal. The airport chose PLACE, Arconas’ latest beam seating solution. According to Jesse Meyer, the airport’s Manager of Commercial Services rationale behind offering the most comprehensive seating system for passengers, “There is a need to provide exceptional service. Power before boarding is essential now,” he says. “We have received very positive feedback. It is something that passengers are looking for in any terminal building.”

Co-designed for Arconas by renowned architect Curt Fentress and industrial designer Michael McCoy, « The goal [we] had was to effectively address the frustrations that travelers face daily. As a frequent flier, I can confidently say that PLACE is a huge step toward alleviating some of that pain. PLACE balances pragmatic functionality with a brilliantly simple aesthetic, » Fentress explains.

PLACE provides AC power and USB ports, built to international standards, in an integrated power pod beneath each armrest. Combined with tablet arms – armrests wide enough to accommodate tablets and other devices – drink holders and more space between seats, PLACE elevates clients’ expectations that every seat be “the best seat in the house.”
